Help Peter Smith Raise Funds for Mates in Mining
Hi, I’m Peter Smith, a SEQT Manager at Carosue Dam. I’m hoping you will support to me raise funds for Mates in Mining.
I have worked in the mining industry for over 26 years starting as a Mine Surveyor in Broken Hill and then in Safety with BCM in Perth (Corporate), Ireland, Telfer and now at Carosue Dam.
Over the years I have witnessed great improvements in how mental health issues are dealt with, but with 1 in 8 mates experiencing depression, 1 in 5 experiencing anxiety, 1 in 14 reporting substance abuse and suicide rates 80% higher in mining, I feel strongly about the work Mates in Mining does and wanted to contribute to the improvement of mental health in our industry.
At 64 years ‘young’ I am hoping that my challenge to ride 10,300 m of hills over 770 km in six days across Portugal will inspire you to make a small donation to the Mates in Mining worthy cause.
Preparation for such a challenge is not taken lightly, putting in 14+ hours of training a week over the last 8 months to prepare for the mountains. By the time I get to the starting line on the 13th of May 2024 I would have completed well over 500 hours of training on the bike covering nearly 10,000 kilometres with 18,000 metres of climbing. All whilst working a 4/3 roster….and with a wife that has an endless ‘list of jobs’ for me.
I would really appreciate your support for this worthy cause. You can make your donation through the Mates in Mining website, MATES Big Leap Event using the following link.
I have triple checked with the Mates Organisation and your donation does go to Mates in Mining NOT to Mates in Construction.

After the ride is complete, I’ll let you know how the fundraising and the ride went.
Thanks in advance for your support.
