The Bulyanhulu Gold Mine is an underground gold mine in the Shinyanga Region of Tanzania, 55km south of Lake Victoria. Following the opening of Bulyanhulu, Tanzania became the third-largest producer of gold in Africa, behind South Africa and Mali.
When mining resumed in 1999 after faltering in the early stages of development, Byrnecut was awarded the contract – our first major commitment to international contract mining.
Byrnecut’s scope of works included mechanised lateral development and production activities, shaft sinking, fleet maintenance and workforce training.
The use of mechanised mining techniques and Byrnecut’s world-standard safety and training policies and procedures saw the Bulyanhulu project emerge as one of Africa’s leading gold producers. After five years of involvement at the project, Byrnecut handed over operations to the client.
