North Mara gold mine is in the north-western part of Tanzania in the Mara region near the town of Tarime, some 100km east of Lake Victoria and approximately 20km from the border with Kenya. The Gokona orebody is 11km from the North Mara process plant.
The approval to begin underground development at Gokona was made in April 2014, with the first portal blast being taken in early August.
Byrnecut’s scope of works included decline and lateral development, stope production, haulage, and equipment maintenance. The mine was an underground high-speed mechanised trackless operation and used longhole stoping as its principal stoping method.
