Scope
Declining & lateral development, longhole rising & sub-level caving production

Byrnecut's professionalism and customer relationships were key elements in being chosen to develop Saracen Metals' new underground mine at the Thunderbox operations in central Western Australia.

The Thunderbox mine is destined to be a major underground gold mine for Saracen Metals, now part of the Northern Star group of companies. Byrnecut will establishment the underground mining infrastructure; portals, access declines, drill drives, together with ventilation rises, escapeway and slot rises.

Byrnecut was initially selected from a short list of contractors through a competitive Tender process, building on the successful relationship established with Saracen at the Carosue Dam Operations, 200km to the south. Byrnecut recently secured the production contract for an additional four years.

With production ramping over 2021, the mining contract will provide employment for up to 200 personnel, working 365 days per year, 24 hours per day.

Thunderbox will transition into a large modern sub-level caving operation and Byrnecut are pleased to partner with Saracen, recently merged with Northern Star to become one of Australia’s largest gold producers.

As a previous open pit operation, an airstrip and camp are already established on site. Access to site is via predominantly sealed roads from Kalgoorlie and Leinster, with personnel currently commuting to site on a FIFO basis from Perth.
