Byrnecut commenced underground mining operations at Mt Gordon in North Queensland for the Aditya Birla Group in August 2002 after an open tender process.

Works were performed under a fixed and variable contract structure. Initially, mining focused on the historical Mamoth underground mine, but then expanded to include the development of the new Esperanza South mine in 2008. Works continued until June 2009, when the mine was placed under care and maintenance due to low commodity prices following the GFC.
