Byrnecut has undertaken the underground mining operations at Northern Star’s Jundee Gold Mine since 2001.

The Jundee mine was originally started as an open pit operation in 1995, with underground mining commencing in 1997. Byrnecut has performed the underground mining work at Jundee since 2001 through numerous ownership changes, re-tenders and contract extensions.

The Jundee operation actually comprises three separate underground mines – Barton, Gateway and Invicta, each accessed from the base of separate open pits. Byrnecut undertake all underground mining operations, producing approximately 2,100m of development and 185,000 tonnes of ore each month. Byrnecut also operate the crusher feed and surface haulage from each pit to the ROM pad, utilising a fleet of surface loaders and off-highway trucks.

The mine employs an uphole benching method of stoping, with all ore extracted using autonomously guided remote controlled loaders. Byrnecut are market leaders in the utilisation of the Sandvik Automine Autonomous Guidance System for remote controlled loaders. In 2019, Byrnecut's mining team set a world record for single jumbo advance of 754.3 metres in just one month.

The Jundee mine is operated 365 days per year, 24 hours per day with a workforce of around 380 people, working on a fly-in, fly-out roster from Perth.
