Byrnecut commenced operations at Sandfire Resources’ Degrussa copper mine in July 2014, after acquiring the contract through an open tender process.

The Degrussa underground mine is a high-grade copper deposit that commenced operation in 2012. The mine design comprises over 50km of underground development. The mine produces 1.5 million tonnes of copper ore for up to 300,000 tonnes of high-grade copper concentrate per year.

Byrnecut undertakes all underground development and production activities, including longhole stoping and paste-fill operations. Extraction from the open stopes is conducted using autonomous remote-controlled loaders. Mine-life is estimated at seven years and Byrnecut expects to be there for the duration.

The initial contract was renewed for another three years in June 2017 with the scope expanded to include development and production activities at the new Monty deposit, 10km north. Development of the Monty mine commenced in October 2017.

The mine is operated 365 days per year, 24 hours per day with sealed road access from Perth. Byrnecut operate on a fly-in, fly-out basis from Perth with the contract employing 200 people.
