Development and production

In August 2017, Byrnecut was awarded the contract for the underground mining services at Challenger.

This project commenced with a transition from the incumbent contractor and involved hitting accelerated development targets.

Byrnecut was immediately required to catch development up and remove a large backlog of stockpiled dirt from the excavations.

Byrnecut’s scope of work at this operation encompassed the whole suite of underground mining services. We were successful in re-securing the Challenger works after a change in project ownership saw the previous contract terminated.

The Challenger mine was extremely remote, located 730km north-west of Adelaide in the Woomera Protected Area. Access was via unsealed road from Coober Pedy, or by air from Adelaide. The mine operated 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, with a contractor workforce of approximately 100 people.
