Steve Coughlan's Message to the Jabal Sayid Miners
Greg Jackson and Steve Coughlan visited the Jabal Sayid mine and have a message for the miners.
Greg Jackson and I went underground this morning with Project Manager Michael Dombroski. In summary the quality of the excavation, ground support and services installation is first class. Everyone I spoke to were positive about their role. Noted was the correct signage and barricading in use. To maintain the standard requires ongoing discipline, so keep it up.
As mentioned during my shift change address to the crews, BOSA has finalised the new contract for the next 4 years, with a 2 year plus 2 year option. Let me very clear, whilst we provide the systems and equipment to conduct the work, most important is the execution of the contract by the workforce. The sustainable quality and productivity achieved by the workforce earned BOSA the right to win the new contract. For that you should be proud, and we thank you sincerely.
For the 2023 year the mine achieved the production and development targets. I congratulate the combined MBC/BOSA team for the achievement. As mentioned during my address, this was despite the tragic event in January of that year. I reiterate that, by far, most of these events occur due to non-compliance with procedures. Had any one of the employees involved put their hand up and said; "STOP, THIS IS UNSAFE", the event would not have occurred. So I ask that each and everyone of you exercise your right and duty to raise your voice if confronted with a breach of procedure or unsafe act.
It was very pleasing to note recruitment of female employees in the office. Saudi Arabia has ambitious aspirational targets for growth in the mineral resources sector. There is not enough local skilled labour, so opening up training and employment opportunities for the female 50% of the population is critical. Saudi Arabia should be congratulated for this initiative. We look forward to the time when women can be employed underground on heavy equipment, as is the case elsewhere in the world.
Greg and I look forward to visiting Jabal Sayid later in the year.
Best regards and stay safe,
Steve Coughlan
